Our home away from home is Tita Tess’ house in Haarlem. She lives with her son, Kuya Aries, whom we, as kids, grew up with. Okay. I did not grew up. Maybe just grew old?
We got here on May 8, in a country that is 7 hours later than our time zone. The struggle? Jet lag. I slept most of the afternoon and found no difficulty in sleeping straight at night that day.
So the next morning is my only chance to be accustomed to my surroundings. This dining table is what usually greets me, and makes some pleasant movement in my stomach. Why? Two words: Dutch Food.
We’re so lucky that Tita Tess took many days off from work to be with us. I don’t know about you, but seeing how they cook, talk, traverse and live interests me. I’m all about the little things! Looking all over her pantry, I’m greeted by loads of things I can possibly eat. Cue: carbs. There are bottles of delicious pastes, boxes of rtd (ready-to-do) meals, containers of juices and sodas, and chocolates.
Her kitchen is spanky nice I don’t mind being the dishwasher. Well, it has been my choice of chore anyway.
Talking about the house: it’s a lovely apartment located a few blocks away from Winkelcentrum. Tita Tess made it her own by planting a little forest by the window, trying to grow produce in such a small but efficient space. She is proud of the black leather couches (one seen like a shadow below), which she bought second-hand for… okay, don’t be shocked: 90 Euros.
Her cabinet is fully loaded with books and David Levithan’s Everyday felt so small against the library!
One thing I loved doing most of the time, is not spying on the neighbor homes, but looking at the passersby. Bikes, cars, people walking dogs, children playing ball…
People watching has always been my hobby.
There’s a gorgeous painting set in the midst of the white blank wall. The little shelf is full of pictures of the family, mostly Bella, her first grandchild, and Sophie, the second. Kuya Aries, her eldest son, lives in the house with her and always throws in stories for the fun.
When there’s a reunion, reminiscing about the old days is a must-do.
