You know the way, you trust your feet, but you don’t always get the hold of the ground. It happens. Slipping. Falling backwards. Rolling down the precipice and back into the place where you struggled to climb. You could be a pro and still suck at it. The earth is constantly changing. The rocks grown on their own. An invisible hand constantly shapes the land as it molds your heart. When before you consider the apex within reach, you now find a great distance between you and the peak.
At one point, maybe you’d even decide to walk away from it all.
What’s it worth, anyway? What do you get out of it? Fame? Glory? Bragging rights? There’s the bed, and it calls you. There’s the comfort of your home, and you’re ready to go back. You don’t have to be scared. You don’t have to be bruised. You don’t have to be out there, second-guessing the unknown, soaking in the dirt.
But please, don’t go back.
Not just yet.
Not until you have tested the strength of your feet, the pliability of your heart. Not until every edged stone make their mark on your skin as medals of honor, as evidence of your perseverance. Not until you touch the clouds. Until you come face to face with the sun.
Not until you have seen the greater horizon waiting for you at the side.
Because, trust me, tThe planet is made out of thousands of facets. It’s not round. Not flat. Not one dimensional. There is no single road. No mapped line. We all get lost in curves and spirals, and all of us tumble down our own paths, so we can earn the bravado to rise up again.
Move. Move until you’ve moved your mountains. Make it your footstool. Make it your stage.
The world never runs out with mountains to climb, and you will always fall, but nevertheless, keep at it. Climb. Trace your footsteps. Make new ones. Recognize your callous hands. The steel in your bones. You are stronger. Better. Wiser.
You will never know where to land, but you will be in places you have never been before. Even a mighty long fall is a step forward. Because you are not who you were.
May you find joy in conquering. And may you never stop.
